Writing & editing

Clear, accurate writing that understands both the sport and the people reading about it.

I write and edit content for organisations working in athletics and sport, from individual features and event coverage to web copy, interviews and longer editorial projects.

More than 20 years in athletics media has taught me that good specialist writing is about more than knowing the subject. It has to be accurate without becoming impenetrable, informed without assuming too much, and engaging whether the reader knows every split time or is discovering the sport for the first time.

I can take a piece from first idea to final copy, or step in at any point along the way.

That might mean shaping an interview into a feature, tightening a draft that is almost there, rewriting copy for a different audience, or helping turn a pile of information into something people will actually want to read.

My background spans news, features, previews, event reports, athlete profiles, historical pieces, statistical content and digital publishing.

I’m particularly comfortable with athletics because I know the sport from the inside: its rhythms, terminology, history, personalities and the details that matter to knowledgeable fans.

What I can help with

Sometimes you need somebody to write the piece. Sometimes you already have the piece and just need somebody who can see what it ought to become.

I’m happy doing either.
