According to clients from hell, one of the most common requests that clients make is to ‘photoshop’ something out of an image, expecting something to automatically replace it. I place most of the blame for this on TV programmes like CSI and Hollywood movies in general, where a crack team of experts can magically ‘enhance’ images or turn 2D photos into a 3D scene.

Here’s a real-life example of one such crazy job:

Client: “Can you re-touch the hat off the man?”
Designer: “Yes, what kind of hair would you like?”
Client: “You will see when you take the hat off.”

Anyone who has ever used photoshop will know exactly how preposterous this request is. However, after seeing a preview of the new Content-Aware Fill tool in Photoshop CS5 (due to be released very soon), tasks such as this may actually become possible. Here’s the preview:

Part of me is really excited to get my hands on this new software. But there’s another part of me that fears what clients will start requesting once they find out that Photoshop has become far more powerful.

CS5? Blimey – maybe by 2012! Content aware – lovely – superb stuff. A worthwhile feature and will save hours of work.
